چکیده

Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) constitute the core of a number of emerging technologies with a high potential for treating urban wastewater due to a fascinating reaction mechanism—the electron transfer between bacteria and electrodes to transform metabolism into electrical current. In the current work, we focus on the model electroactive microorganism Geobacter sulfurreducens to explore both the design of new start-up procedures and electrochemical operations. Our chemostat-grown plug and play cells, were able to reduce the start-up period by 20-fold while enhancing chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal by more than 6-fold during this period. Moreover, a filter-press based bioreactor was successfully tested for both acetate-supplemented synthetic wastewater and real urban wastewater. This proof-of-concept pre-pilot treatment included a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) followed in time by a microbial fuel cell (MFC) to finally generate electrical current of ca. 20 A ̈m ́2 with a power of 10 W ̈m ́2 while removing 42 g COD day ́1 ̈m ́2. The effective removal of acetate suggests a potential use of this modular technology for treating acetogenic wastewater where Geobacter sulfurreducens outcompetes other organisms.

Producing Renewable Energy from Municipal Wastewater Treatment Using a Bio–electrochemical System

Concurrent renewable energy production and wastewater treatment are two main reasons for using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this study, real wastewater was used for treating and power generation by air cathode microbial desalination cells (ACMFC). The total duration of voltage generation by ACMFC was about 151.9 ±23.2 h. The maximum voltage produced from municipal wastewater treatment was 27...

Effect of Start-Up Strategies and Electrode Materials on Carbon Dioxide Reduction on Biocathodes

The enrichment of CO2-reducing microbial biocathodes is challenging. Previous research has shown that a promising approach could be to first enrich bioanodes and then lower the potential so the electrodes are converted into biocathodes. However, the effect of such a transition on the microbial community on the electrode has not been studied. The goal of this study was thus to compare the start-...

Optimizing Load Policy in Anaerobic Biofilm Reactors for Wastewater Treatment

-A rigorous dynamic model of anaerobic biofilm reactor (Mussati et al., 1998) is used to optimize and evaluate different loading strategies in anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. This work includes variations in the original model so that the results of process simulation also represent the initial events of the start up operation as regards the biofilm growth. The model was implemented in ...

Effect of batch vs. continuous mode of operation on microbial desalination cell performance treating municipal wastewater

Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) have  great potential as a cost-effective and green technology for simultaneous water desalination, organic matter removal and energy production. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a MDC under batch and continuous feeding conditions. Hence, power and current output, coulombic efficiency, electron harvest rate, desalination rate and COD re...
